The most cost effective solution is a weather resistant cable tie in Nylon 6/6. This material extends the life expectancy to 7 - 9 years, a huge improvement on the 1 - 2 years for a standard Nylon 6/6 cable tie. There are also weather resistant in-line cable ties available in 16 UV resistant colours, designed primarily for children’s soft play and playground environments. The Dome-Top “Barb-Ty” style of cable tie, with the stainless steel barb in the head, is also available in this material; weather resistant “Barb Ty”. There are other materials that extend the life expectancy even further. Cable ties in Nylon 12 will last for 12 – 15 years and Tefzel cable ties and Halar cable ties will last for at least 15 years and offer other benefits such as higher temperature and flammability ratings and good resistance to chemicals and radiation.

Stainless steel cable ties offer the greatest weathering life expectancy of at least 30 years and can withstand direct burial. Available in 304 and 316 grade stainless steel their working temperature range is from -80°C to +538°C. Stainless steel cable ties in 316 grade are particularly recommended for all off-shore and marine environments. They also have excellent resistance to chemicals and radiation.
